SHIATSU Shiatsu literally means finger pressure (shi = finger, atsu = pressure). Originated in Japan a few hundred years ago, it is based on the acupuncture system but instead of using needles, it uses fingers, hands, elbows, forarms and feet. This system is based on the principle that a vital force called Ki flows through a series of connected pathways called meridians, which in turn are connected to an organ or psycho-physical function. When in a healthy state, this Ki energy flows uninterruptedly through the connected pathways, continually completing its cyclical flow, similar to that of the circulatory. Any numbers of things can cause a disruption of this flow - injury, disease, poor diet, lack of exercise, excesses or insufficiencies of any kind. When an imbalance occurs, it will be reflected in the meridians either as an excess (Jitsu) or an insufficiency (Kyo). These conditions will generally display themselves in specific locations along the meridians, specific points called tsubos, also known as acupressure points. It is generally at the tsubos that specific treatment is given to remove the blocks that get in the way of the natural healing process. Traditionally performed on the floor on a 3" mat, Shiatsu doesn't use oil, therefore it is not required to remove your clothing, a light cotton clothing is deal.
